Farragut hosts women’s wrestling winter camp
Over the winter break, Admiral Farragut Academy Wrestling hosted the 2nd annual Adrian College Women’s Wrestling Winter Camp. Thirty young ladies were in attendance for the two-day camp that included six sessions of instruction. The camp was open to all girls in 6th-12th grade and attendees came from all over the state of Florida. Four of our female wrestlers attended including Jenna Willard, Madison Moore, Grace Vernine, and Riley Lancaster.
During the camp, the girls were given the opportunity to learn Folkstyle and Freestyle wrestling techniques from Adrian College Women’s Wrestling Coach Cliff Cushard, AFA Women’s Wrestling Coach Tony LoRusso, Team Florida Women’s Wrestling Coach Steve Hall, and Coach Conor Beebe of Beebe Trained Wrestling Club.
Farragut alumna Angela LoRusso ’19, a current wrestler at Adrian College, was also in attendance to help work with the young ladies and inspire the next generation of women wrestlers. Women’s Wrestling continues to be the fastest-growing high school sport in the country and at the collegiate level with over 70 schools offering school supported programs, including scholarship opportunities.
Even with the tremendous growth women’s wrestling is seeing there are still limited opportunities for young women to participate in girls-only events. Most girls across the country are left training and competing on their boy’s team, which leaves many at a disadvantage as they reach upper high school age. That makes hosting camps such as this even more important in providing these young women an opportunity to train, compete, and grow in a sport they love while making connections with like-minded girls. Currently, Admiral Farragut Academy is one of the only schools in the Tampa Bay area with a concentrated women’s wrestling program, having their own coach and separate girls-only tournaments.
If you are interested in joining the women’s wrestling team contact Coach LoRusso. Any female athlete in 6th-12th grade is eligible to join. Practices are 3:45-5:30 PM Monday-Friday in the Huntley Field House.
