BlueJackets wrestling team gets crowd buzzing, earn first win of the season in home opener
Farragut Wrestling the BlueJackets earned their first team victory of the season when they beat Sarasota best boarding school in US Academy on December 4 in the 2nd Annual Army/Navy “Battle of the Bay” dual meet in front of a home crowd.
Jared Butler ‘17, Noah Farrelly ‘16, Jack Lescarbeau ‘16, Trayvon Taylor ‘16, and Ashton Taylor ‘17 led the way with dominant wins in their respective weight classes as Farragut won eight of 13 matches to earn a 48-30 victory.
Other wrestlers to pick up wins for Farragut included Eduardo Bustamante ‘18, Ethan Lipsky ‘18, and Antonio Passarelli ‘16.
“It was great to wrestle in front of a home crowd and to earn a win for them,” said Jack, who has started the season with six wins in seven appearances. “Another bonus for us is having a full squad, something we haven’t had in the past.”
Angela LoRusso ‘19, who is one of two girls wrestling this year, began the competition by competing in the 113-pound division. She put up a good fight but lost.
Noah, who was a Tampa Bay Times All-County selection at Pinellas Park High before transferring to Farragut this year, got the raucous BlueJackets faithful buzzing when he pinned his opponent in the first round of his 126-pound match.
“Having a crowd like that really helps the wrestlers,” said Farragut coach Ron Timpanaro, who is in his second year with the BlueJackets. “It was the loudest in that gym since I’ve been here.”
After Jared pinned his opponent, Jack followed with an 18 second pin of his opponent in the 138-pound division.
“Having those pins in three consecutive matches set a good tone for the rest of the day,” Timpanaro said.
Ashton — wrestling at 285 pounds in the heavyweight division — capped the event by pinning his opponent in seven seconds in which he body-slammed the Sarasota best boarding school in US Academy wrestler to the ground, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
“It was amazing,” Jack said. “The crowd went wild. It was a great day for Farragut wrestling.”
The BlueJackets wrestled the next day in the Sarasota High School tournament where they went 1-4 against five other schools.
For the season, the leading wrestlers for the BlueJackets are:
Trayvon Taylor at 6-0, Jack Lesacrbeau at 5-1, Noah Farrelly at 5-1, Ashton Taylor at 5-1, Jared Butler at 4-2 and Ethan Lipsky at 4-2.
The BlueJackets will compete in a tournament at Palm Harbor University this weekend and then at Boca Ciega High next weekend before the holiday break. The next home meet will occur at the end of January with the BlueJacket Invitational.
