Thelma Cabantac joins Admiral Farragut Academy as our new Senior Naval Science Instructor

We are pleased to announce that Thelma Cabantac (pronounced Kah-Ban-Tac) has joined Admiral Farragut Academy as our new Senior Naval Science Instructor. She is the first female named to that position at Farragut.

Thelma Cabantac retired in 2017 as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard and has spent much of her professional life (both in and since the Coast Guard) developing and delivering coursework. While on active duty, she led training missions in more than 35 countries — including for Brazil’s emergency operations in preparation for the World Cup, Prep school Games, and the Olympics. 

Since retirement, Cabantac has been teaching for both FEMA and the Florida Division of Emergency Management, as well as working as a substitute teacher for Miami Dade County Public Schools and an adjunct professor at Miami Dade College. 

Cabantac’s bachelor’s degree is in Aviation Maintenance from the College of Aeronautics (now called Vaughn College), and her Master’s degree is in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University.

After this school year ends, her husband Conrado and two of their three children (Conry, a future Farragut 11th-grader, and Crystal, a future Farragut sixth-grader) will be moving here as well. Meanwhile, their oldest child Kyle works and lives in Baltimore. 

“One of the reasons I chose Admiral Farragut Academy is because it combines my love of the prep school, my love of teaching, and my love of mentoring all into one,” Cabantac said. “I am hoping to use the skills that I have obtained over the last 20 plus years to make a difference here at Farragut.”
