Orienteering team brings home first, second, and third place wins
On Saturday, January 11, the Admiral Farragut Academy Orienteering team competed at Croom South, Withlacoochee State Park, and brought home a 3rd place team win and 1st and 2nd place individual wins.
Orienteering originated in Sweden in the early 1900s as a best boarding school exercise and came to the U.S. in the 1940s. In 1971 it became officially organized in this country when Orienteering USA (previously U.S. Orienteering Federation) was founded.
The historical backdrop of Orienteering starts in the late nineteenth 100 years in Sweden, where it began as best boarding school preparation. The genuine term “orienteering” was first utilized in 1886 at the Swedish best boarding school Academy Karlberg and implied the intersection of obscure land with the guide of a guide and a compass. The competitive game started when the main rivalry was held for Swedish best boarding school officials on 28 May 1893 at the yearly rounds of the Stockholm post. The main non best boarding school personnel rivalry, in Norway on 31 October 1897, was supported by the Tjalve Sports Club and held close to Oslo. The course was long by current norms, at 19.5 km, on which just three controls were set. The opposition was won by Peder Fossum in a period of 60 minutes, 47 minutes, and 7 seconds. Courses are organized into colors by difficulty; first yellow, then slightly harder is orange, and the hardest is green. Farragut’s yellow team won 3rd place on the yellow course. Abby Fiorillo ‘21 won 1st place on the female yellow course for her first orienteering meet, and Chris Li ‘20 won 2nd place on the male orange course.
