SAGE Dining Blog: From their dietitians on supporting your immune system

Check out this blog by SAGE Dining Services, Farragut’s dining partner, about using food to support your immune system.

Protein; vitamins A, C, and E; zinc; and probiotics are some of the many nutrients that come together to support the immune system. To get these nutrients:

  1. Eat a balanced diet of proteins (meat, seafood, eggs, beans, and peas), carbohydrates (especially whole grains), and fats (especially in seeds and oils).
  2. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables in different colors. Try to include a fruit or vegetable at every meal or snack.
  3. Add in some fermented foods and drinks, such as yogurt, sauerkraut, tempeh, and kimchi.

Remember to get plenty of sleep, manage stress, and — most importantly — wash your hands!

Coronavirus Update:

SAGE Dining is currently feeding brunch to our staff and students that are still on Admiral Farragut Academy’s campus.

Letter from SAGE Dining regarding Coronavirus sent on March 20, 2020

Greetings,

Despite temporary school closings, SAGE’s work continues — to keep your community safe, prepared, and engaged.  Here’s a peek at some of the many efforts your Managers are undertaking to keep things humming behind the scenes.

Ongoing management efforts:

  • Cleaning the dining hall and kitchen thoroughly.
  • Reviewing, sorting, and organizing inventory to minimize waste.
  • Communicating product availability and delivery concerns with SAGE’s Purchasing Team.
  • Updating spring, summer, and fall budgets.
  • Writing new menus, especially for planned reopening.
  • Rethinking menus based on method of service, product availability, and seasonality.

Initiatives to move our program forward:

  • Developing new recipes for SAGE’s General Recipe Collection and Catering Recipe Collection.
  • Creating training programs and training videos for hourly-paid Team Members.
  • Writing blogs and social media posts about recipes, kitchen tips, and nutrition that you can share with your parent community.
  • Serving on project-based standing committees, including Waste Minimization and Sustainability.

Purchasing Updates:

To date, there haven’t been any food shortages. The supply chain has successfully met client requirements. As this situation continues, we do anticipate some disruption because of longer lead times for some products and delivery issues caused by driver shortages. Also, some items, such as fresh produce, may be in short supply. We continue to work with all our suppliers to minimize the impact of distribution challenges on our service.

As always, we appreciate the opportunity to serve you, and we look forward to a swift resolution of the current crisis.

Sincerely,

Tina & Paco Rodriguez, Co-Founders
