Andreas “Dre” Fuller’s game-winning three pointer in the closing seconds to beat Tampa Prep may have unleashed a monster.
The star jack-of-all-trades for the Admiral Farragut Academy boys basketball team was a signature moment for the Blue Jackets, who have put themselves in position to make the postseason for the first time in half a decade.
“It felt good,” Fuller said. “He (head coach Julian Allen) had confidence in me that I could make it. So I just delivered for him.”
The junior’s own confidence took a nice jump up after his 21-point performance against the Terrapins, which he followed with 26 points and 13 rebounds in another key district win on the road over Cambridge Christian.
“He looked over to me,” Allen said. “He said, ‘GOAT (greatest of all-time) mode, Coach?’ I said, Yeah, let’s go.”
Fuller’s first-year head coach has pushed his versatile star player to be aggressive and look for his own shot more often.
That advice is paying off.
“Just keep attacking, that’s it,” Fuller said. “Just don’t be afraid to go to the basket. Don’t be afraid to get hurt.”
The 6-foot-6 swingman, who moved to St. Petersburg from North Carolina two years ago, was told by a doctor that he may still grow three more inches.
“If he comes out here 6’9 next year, I’ll be one happy camper, I’ll tell you that,” Allen said. “He’s a problem now. If he was to grow three more inches, that would be amazing.”
Fuller already has offers from Florida and Virginia Tech in his pocket.
There’s no doubt that list will continue to grow, too.
