Alex DeSeta ‘04 helps make a maritime dream come true for heart transplant recipient
Alex DeSeta ’04 recently volunteered his 58-foot Leopard Catamaran, the Aqua Bob, to take 18-year-old Corbin Delk out onto the Charleston Harbor.
Corbin has been in and out of the hospital for years and has four open-heart surgeries and a transplant under his belt. He spent his time at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital staring out his window, watching the yachts in the Charleston harbor. Though he is too old for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, his community rallied together to make his wish of captaining a yacht come true.
“Alex had Corbin on the wheel sailing, and his smile was like a million dollars,” said Ed DeSeta ‘67N, Alex’s dad, who joined them on their voyage. There were other boats blowing their horns, the Coast Guard was out with them in their boat, and there were two fireboats with water spraying an arch that they sailed under. The community also donated food, gifts, and their time.
“We sailed back as the sun was setting,” Ed added. “What a beautiful three hours onboard Aqua Bob.”
“It means so much,” Corbin said. “I’m on a boat!”
