On March 5, Kelly Rubash ‘09 finished as the Second Runner-Up in the sixth annual Tampa Bay Woman of the Year fundraising event by the Westchase Foundation in Hillsborough County. The competition lasted over nine weeks during which 13 candidates raised funds for families in need, totaling a little over $100,000 during that span. Read more
Admiral Farragut Academy continually strives to improve in all areas, especially in the areas of student safety and academics. In order to strengthen the safety, security and protection of our students and all other members of our community, we have contracted with an outside security firm, Critical Intervention Services (CIS). Their Guardian SafeSchool Program is designed as a holistic, integrated program that employs a multi-layered strategy to reduce all risks. The program has drawn national-level recognition from the criminal justice and school safety community, and is currently implemented at several independent schools in Florida as well as the University Area Community Development Center in Tampa. Details about this program will be forthcoming.

Additionally, the Upper School schedule next year will include an assigned study hall with the same teacher, in the middle of the day four days per week. The intent is to help our students with time management, class preparation and homework completion, while managing their extracurricular activities after school. Attendance will be required, consistent with the rest of their classes. This time will be supervised and used for students to receive help with homework, and encourage them to complete assignments in a timely manner. We will still have a full eight-period structured rotating class schedule and boarding students will still have evening study hall.

Next year the Lower School will be introducing a new science curriculum, Pearson Interactive Science, for PreK through 2nd grade which has a STEM component. Students in 2nd through 5th grade will continue to learn how to code interactive games, stories, and art using the popular online program, Code Studio.
Students in 4th through 7th grade now have the opportunity to create their own 3D printed projects using our new Dremel 3D printer. We will continue to enhance our new engineering program during MakerSpace Club, where students use their research skills and imagination to build and create any project of their choosing using real world tools.

Kollyne Thomas ‘16 is constantly searching for the perfect connection of words. A voracious reader amongst a bevy of readers in her family, Kollyne’s love for literature helped mold her into her current status as a meticulous writer. Prep school, Imagine being strapped in a chair, fastened with a seatbelt across both shoulders while immersed chest-deep in water of a swimming pool. You wear opaque goggles and the “window” next to you is closed, essentially simulating a murky scenario. Read more
The 8th Grade Marine Biology class conducted interviews with local fishermen as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Federal “Fishermen of the Greater Tampa Bay” Oral History Grant for the fourth time in two years (held each semester) on March 12th. Students conducted interviews with area fishermen and gathered information about what it has been like to fish the waters for Tampa Bay over the last few decades. Read more

EVE EDELHEIT | Times | Ammaar Mohammed, 12, from Bayaan Academy waits to spell his word in the final round of the Tampa Bay Area Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Mohammed went on to win the bee with the word, valetudinarian. Mohammed will travel to Washington D.C. in May to compete in the Scripps National Spelling bee.

The Anchors Aweigh Annual Auction held by the Parents’ Group was a huge success this year. The auction is the biggest fundraiser held each year by the parents and proceeds support items for all grades in addition to big ticket purchases such a new van, bus, sailboat, and outfitting a technology classroom, etc. Read more
Alex Fiorillo ‘19 ran the 5k race in the 7th Annual FL Beach Halfathon on March 6 at Ft. DeSoto Park and finished first in his age group, a remarkable accomplishment considering it was the first road race he had ever entered. Alex, 14, finished with a time of 21:05.3, the fastest of 34 other participants in his age group.
“My mom thought it would be something good for me to do,” said Alex, who has been playing soccer for a majority of his life and recently finished his first season on the varsity boys team at Farragut. “I was pretty excited when I found out I had finished first in my age group. I guess the running I do for conditioning in soccer has paid off.”
Alex participates year round with the Pinellas County United Soccer Club organization as a goalie as well as a midfielder. He was the starting goalkeeper on the Farragut middle school soccer team that finished with a 10-1 record last year and the backup keeper on the varsity team this season.
Alex said he expects to enter a couple more races this summer. Great job, Alex!
