Lower School FAQs

While we don't offer a Pre-Kindergarten program at this time, it is under consideration, and we are actively looking into providing this in the future. Currently, Admiral Farragut Academy is proud to provide an exceptional educational experience beginning in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Our focus is on enhancing and expanding our K–12 programs. This allows us to devote even more attention, resources, and enrichment opportunities to our students as they grow through each stage of their academic journey.

We’d be delighted to share more about how Farragut supports young learners starting in Kindergarten and beyond!

At Farragut, our classroom structure is designed to give students the right balance of consistency, support, and age-appropriate independence as they grow.

Grades K–2
Our youngest learners enjoy self-contained classrooms, where one primary teacher guides them through all core subjects. This creates a warm, nurturing environment with plenty of stability. Students also enjoy enrichment classes taught by specialists in Art, Music, Spanish, P.E., and STEM.

Grades 3–4
As students gain confidence and readiness for more independence, they learn from two core teachers: one for Language Arts/Social Studies and one for Math/Science. They switch classrooms mid-day and continue to rotate to their specialist classes in Music, Spanish, P.E., Art, and more.

Grades 5–7
Upper elementary and middle school students follow a six-period schedule, transitioning between teachers for each subject. They also enjoy lunch, recess, and music or art each semester, helping them build time-management skills while exploring their interests.

This progression ensures that students grow academically and socially at a pace that feels natural, supported, and exciting.

Our Lower School students enjoy a more relaxed, comfortable dress option. They wear what the Upper School calls “travel gear,” which includes an Admiral Farragut Academy polo paired with khaki shorts, pants, or a skort. It’s an easy, student-friendly uniform that keeps mornings simple while still showing school pride!

For most grades, all textbooks and classroom materials are included in tuition.

Students in 6th and 7th grade have a $250 curriculum fee, which covers the additional resources and materials needed for their expanded coursework.

We keep fees simple and transparent so families know exactly what to expect.

Every Lower School student enjoys a full 30-minute recess each day.

We’re also excited to share that we recently installed a brand-new, state-of-the-art playground, designed to give children plenty of opportunities to learn, explore, and grow through play. It’s a student favorite!

Grades 5, 6, and 7 follow a schedule similar to a traditional Middle School. Students transition between six classes each day, enjoy lunch and recess, and experience increasing independence as they prepare for Upper School.

This structure gives students the best of both worlds: the supportive Lower School environment alongside age-appropriate responsibility and readiness for the next step.

We make the transition thoughtful, supportive, and confidence-building. In 7th grade, students participate in a special “Prospective 8th-Grade Day.” During this experience, they meet with the Head and Assistant Head of Upper School, the Commandant, Naval Science staff, the School Counselor, and former Lower School students who share what Upper School life is really like.

This introduction helps students feel informed, welcomed, and excited as they prepare for the next chapter of their Farragut journey.

Lower School students experience a rich variety of signature programs designed to spark curiosity and build strong foundational skills. STEM/Engineering: Begins in Kindergarten and continues every year through 7th grade, giving students hands-on opportunities to design, build, and problem-solve.

Marine Science: Offered starting in 5th grade, allowing students to explore ocean life, local ecosystems, and real-world environmental concepts.

Spanish, Art, and Music: Students enjoy these creative and cultural classes from the earliest grades through 7th grade, supporting well-rounded learning and self-expression.

These programs help students discover their interests and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Leadership development is woven into the Lower School experience. Students learn to take initiative, work as a team, and build confidence through everyday classroom activities as well as through opportunities like Student Government, Safety Patrol, and various clubs.

These experiences help students practice responsibility and discover their unique leadership strengths in a supportive environment.

We love parent participation! It makes the day even more special for the students. Details about chaperone opportunities are shared ahead of each trip, and we greatly value your support and involvement.
