Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Updated 8/12/2021

Admiral Farragut Academy is taking all precautions necessary to attempt to minimize exposure to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). We are maintaining a safe and secure campus environment with continued guidance from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and local health officials.

We Are Learning On Campus!

Farragut was open for the 2020-2021 school year and will continue to remain open for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.

Health & Safety Precautions

For Students and Employees

Learn exactly what we are doing for the safety of our students in their various divisions.

Last week was Spirit Week at Admiral Farragut Academy. Our Lower School students showed their spirit with four themed days of dress up.

Admiral Farragut Academy has updated all health precautions following the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes new Student Health Center procedures and quarantine rooms, providing facemasks for students, education on hygiene and proper hand washing, cleaning of common areas, classrooms, and the dormitories, and campus-wide nightly cleaning. SAGE Dining has also updated its dining policies.

  • We respectfully ask families to keep their child(ren) home even if an illness symptom seems minor. We know that COVID manifests itself in many different ways with children.
  • Students will be required to wear a facemask when inside the classroom or in confined spaces.
  • All teachers will take advantage of the open campus and utilize the space for teaching opportunities that allow for social distancing and mask removal.
  • Our nursing staff will monitor absenteeism to identify illness trends among students.
  • Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles, which may be filled at filtered-water dispensers throughout campus. Traditional water fountains will not be available.
  • Upper School class periods are on a traditional-rotating schedule and are approximately an hour long.

For the start of school, we are asking all persons, including students on campus, to please wear a mask in classrooms and confined spaces. Masks will not be required in outdoor areas. For Upper School, like last year, masks should be blue, black, or white and absent of any logos or writing.

We will re-evaluate this policy during the first 30 days of school and follow guidance and recommendations from the federal, state, and local levels. It is quite possible, at that time, we will be willing to offer a waiver to those who do not want to wear a mask or want their child to not wear a mask. Our goal is the same; to keep our school safe and healthy. As a school, we will continue with reinforcing good hand hygiene, social distancing in classrooms to the extent possible, water bottle fillers vs. water fountains, and timely contact tracing when needed.

With the surge in the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus, we have partnered with a laboratory to do weekly testing on all of our boarding population (staff included). The test is a simple cheek swab. This will allow us to pick up any possible “positives” before a student or staff member becomes symptomatic and minimize the spread. It will give the boarding students the ability to move more freely amongst each other in the dorms.  Since the dorms are their “homes” we want students to be as comfortable as possible.

Faculty, staff, and day students (with parent/guardian consent) may participate in this weekly no cost to you testing program. To enroll, email nurse@farragut.org or call +1-727-384-5506.

The school has installed 247™ 24V Germicidal UV lights throughout the entire campus. These lights have proven to provide continuous germicidal disinfection by sterilizing mold, bacteria, and viruses and greatly improve indoor air quality.

The School Plan

Keeping a Safe Environment for All

Learn exactly what we are doing for the safety of our students in their various divisions.

Safety and wellness is top priority

Our commitment to the well-being of students, faculty, and staff is imperative.

  • AFA’s protocols and policies follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and direction from our state and local government
  • Disinfectant dispensers and handwashing stations are strategically available throughout campus.
  • Full-time health and medical staff is on-site
  • Ongoing cleaning/sanitizing of shared spaces
  • UV Lights installed in all air conditioning units (UV light destroys harmful microorganisms, including mold, mildew, fungi, bacteria, and viruses)
  • The Student Health Center has been remodeled to quarantine boarding students if needed
  • All but two campus gates will be closed between drop off/pick up
  • Visitors — including parents — will be restricted to those who are essential and will be required to wear a face-covering and complete a health screening form

Hygiene is Paramount

  • Daily campus cleaning/disinfection will follow strict protocols, including documentation of completion.
  • Bathrooms and high touch areas will be cleaned twice a day by our cleaning staff.
  • Each classroom will have adequate supplies to clean desks and chairs between classes.
  • Teachers will be instructed on what “high-touch” areas should be cleaned frequently.
  • Pump hand sanitizer stations have been placed in all classrooms, entrances, hallways, and Lower School carpool lines.
  • Bathrooms will be monitored to ensure supplies are available for proper hand hygiene.
  • Farragut-owned vehicles will be sanitized between drivers as well as daily.
  • SAGE Dining will follow its comprehensive plan for disinfecting the Mess Hall.
  • All SAGE employees will wear face coverings while in shared spaces (both indoors and outdoors) on campus and whenever social distancing is not possible.
  • Students, faculty, and staff at the start of school will be educated on proper hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These valuable tools will be reinforced throughout the school year.

40-acre campus with space to spread

The plan is making good use of Farragut’s sizable waterfront location. The site is practically designed for social distancing. Consider:

  • Most classrooms open directly to the outside (few interior corridors)
  • Doors can/will remain open for extra ventilation as weather permits
  • Teachers can hold outdoor classes year-round
  • Classes are small
  • We’ve added new spaces for student meals so they can spread out beyond the Mess Hall
  • Solo activities include sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding
Admiral Farragut Academy welcomes candidates for admission or employment, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age,
disability or genetics and does not discriminate on the basis of any category protected by law in the administration of any of its programs.
