Marcus Herron comes to Admiral Farragut Academy after 2.5 years of rebuilding a music program in Seattle, Washington. In his previous post as the sole music teacher at Rainier Beach High School, he taught piano, band, orchestra, choir, guitar, percussion ensemble, and music survey. He also served as the instrumental music director at Pasadena High School (Pasadena, CA), music assistant at Mesa Verde Middle School (Rancho Penasquitos, CA), and director of music at La Costa Canyon High School (Carlsbad, CA). He has taught courses ranging from beginning band, concert band, jazz band, to marching band, percussion ensemble, color guard, music technology, and musical theater ensemble. He began his career as the Assistant Director of bands at Mayfield High School (Las Cruces, NM), where he co-taught three concert bands, three jazz bands, and a 5-time state champion 270 piece marching band. He has also served as a woodwind instructor for the Central Coast Music Academy in San Luis Obispo, California for several years, and a private music instructor for Music and Arts in Burien, Washington specializing in woodwinds and low brass. He is currently working on a masters degree in Learning and Technology from Washington Governors University.
Marcus loves to teach music. He says it is his joy to see students develop a love for music and hone leadership skills that participating in a well-organized music program can provide. In his spare time, he likes to ride motorcycles, cook, participate in community music ensembles, and spend time with his other half (who is an Admiral Farragut Academy Alum) and their two dogs. A couple of fun facts about him: He used to work as a process assistant for Amazon, had a career in fine jewelry sales in Washington, DC, was a reading and math enrichment coach for grades K-8 in Los Angeles, and was an event manager for a large catering company in San Diego, California.
